By Nature men are nearly alike

By Nature men are nearly alike
By practice they get wide apart
– Confucius

We all have base level instincts and emotions, anger, sadness, happiness etc

This is where we are all alike, but through practice or not is where we set ourselves apart

One person can have desires for material things and always gives in to temptation to buy them,

Where as the next practices frugality and resists the urge to buy them

One person gets in a rage about the slightest upset, the next practices hardship and readys its mind for them to arise.

It’s also the same way your friends grow apart from you, they practice something you don’t and eventually your interests dont align anymore…

We are all alike
Until we practice

Life On Hold

On Hold

It’s easy to put your life on hold when you’re looking forward to or nervous about something.

‘Putting things off is the biggest waste of life: it snatches away each day as it comes, and denies us the present by promising the future’

-Seneca

We’ve had these issues for a few thousand years by the looks of it.

But all those things that we could have done, whilst waiting for an uncertain future is such a waste…

I know because I am the king of it…

2020 was no doubt a lonely year especially for me (You can read about it in my posts about Rome)

So when get speaking to someone and the conversation goes well, All I want to do is talk to them, Kinda understandable but I miss out on, Reading, Studying, Writing, Not focusing 100% on my workouts…

And the majority of the time they amount to nothing…

So not only have I wasted time but got nothing out of it either…

We all do it,

like when you’re waiting to hear back from a job, you don’t apply for others, you just keep refreshing your emails hoping for that one that says congratulations…

I’m sure there are many other examples too…

But the moral is, The present is all we have, don’t but your life on hold for something not guaranteed.

Don’t cheat the world of your contribution.

Don’t cheat the world of your contribution. Give it what you’ve got

– Steven Pressfield

We’re not going to be a hit overnight
Our work may go unnoticed for a very long time.
We may feel like we’re getting nowhere
But one day all of a sudden  something might change.

But it never will if we give up on day 2.
If we wait till we’ve worked those overtime shifts
Or we have all our ducks in a row.

Because it never will happen.
So get in your office, workshop, studio or wherever  you produce your art and Do the work.

Because your contribution matters.
Especially more than ever today.

Get after it

Get After It
-Jocko Willnik

Its easy to overthink things
Its easy to put off
To create a to do list of a thousnad things to do and get nothing done.
In the end what matters is not what was said but what was done,
so in the words of Jocko

Crowns play tricks on the heads they lie upon

‘Crowns do queer things to the heads beneath them’

Tyrion Lannister (GOT)

Just that you do the right thing. The rest doesn’t matter. Cold or warm. Tired or well-rested. Despised or honored

Power can do some strange things as Marcus Aurelius had to remind himself to do the right thing, one can only imagine what power lay at his hands and the temptation it would have come with it.

Modern day we have world leaders despite growing evidence that we do not have a massive killer disease at hand still locking down their citizens

Whether they think they’re doing the right thing or their is something bigger at play I dont know.

(Probably the latter)

What they do is out of our control, we can’t control decisions they make,

But control how we act and react to them.

We can do the right thing

We can protest peacefully, whilst police use their force.

We can read actual science and not the news papers, to educate ourselves and others on what’s actually happening.

Or if you feel it’s the right thing you can stay inside.

Whatever you do, do what you think is the right thing
