Overcoming Resistance

“The amateur believes he must first overcome his fear; then he can do his work. The professional knows that fear can never be overcome.”

-Steven Pressfield, The War of Art

Imagine if Bilbo never left the shire, Or Luke Skywalker never went to the Death Star

Imagine that before they left the door, They talked themselves out of going, They made up excuses like ‘I forgot my handkerchief’, Or ‘I’m supposed to stay here and help on the farm’

The movies that we know and love would be incredibly short and our beloved heroes would just be Hobbits and Farmers.

Questions appear as you do the Work

Questions appear as you do the Work

Trying to solve problems that don’t exist yet is procrastination

You may think its productive, but it isn’t

Because you never know what problems will show themselves and when you try and think of them all

There will be more

So you can never ask the question how do I solve this until it happens

And to do that you need to begin the work

Because when the wheels are in motion, problems are easier to solve than when you haven’t even begun

Stop Thinking

Stop Thinking

And just go already,
Thinking,
Thinking,
Thinking…

Is actually really tiring and you can think yourself out of doing something, The key is to just go or just get started

Otherwise, nothing will get done,
Apart from a whole lot of thinking

Blank paper

Blank paper

A blank page is the worst thing for an artist

Just staring at it knowing the work has not been done

Knowing resistance has won

On the contrary though a blank piece of paper is also an empty space for opportunity to be unravelled

Unlimited opportunity for creativity

But first the artist must overcome resistance and put pen to pad

How many time have you put this off?

How many time have you put this off?

Procrastination the curse that just keeps on taking.

Time and time again we are granted with opportunities to accomplish tasks yet we keep giving those opportunities away.

Time and time again and ironically we end up with less and less time…

I started a course a year ago and it expires today,

Guess who’s spending their evening trying to complete it… Me.

Even after a year of lockdowns and countless lazy days…

Think of your many years of procrastination; how the gods have repeatedly granted you further periods of grace, of which you have taken no advantage. It is time now to realise the nature of the universe to which you belong, and of that controlling Power whose offspring you are; and to understand that your time has a limit set to it. Use it, then, to advance your enlightenment; or it will be gone, and never in your power again

– Marcus Aurelius
