No choice but to plunge in anyway
– Steven Pressfield
In the authentic swing notes from Steven Pressfield first novel
He talks about sometimes a writer doesn’t know what the theme of a book is before or during writing
But he says that’s fine we just have to plunge in anyway
Meaning do the work and write before you have all your ducks in a row
This is true for anything we do in life
A completely unrelated example
I am useless at the online dating thing
I would spend far too long thinking about an opening line then think about what I would say after that and have this whole conversation in my head before I even sent a message
Most of the time the messages never got sent
But when we do the work
Things start to play out and results manifest
Writing the book the theme unfolds
Sending tbe first message the conversation starts
Putting a few quid in a savings account and before you know it you have a nice little some
Whatever you do, you have to plunge in without the answers
Getting Stuck is Normal But Winners Grow Anyway
We all get stuck
Some of us choose to stay stuck
And I say choose because getting stuck is a choice
Its excuses over action
Rather than looking for a way around
When you decide you dont want to be stuck rather than just saying you dont want to be stuck then you can grow
And that problem becomes a possibility
-To put something of yourself into your work
There is a huge reason why many people say their jobs are soul-destroying, All they are putting in is their time,
There is none of their own love going into their work, None of their heart or soul, Just turning up hoping to get away as soon as possible…
‘Is it worth the aggravation
To find yourself a job when there’s nothing worth working for?’
Now I know in today’s economy, many would dream of having a job right now and those with are lucky to have one…
And were not in a position to pick and choose.
But your work and Meraki isn’t just your day job.
It’s your art, it’s you.
Your job may be soul-destroying at times but what you do after that could save it.
What you do for intrinsic motivation (Read my ebook on Mental health for more on Intrinsic motivation) for the sake of pure joy a make those days that are hard to get up on totally worth it
Don’t cheat the world of your contribution. Give it what you’ve got
– Steven Pressfield
We’re not going to be a hit overnight
Our work may go unnoticed for a very long time.
We may feel like we’re getting nowhere
But one day all of a sudden something might change.
But it never will if we give up on day 2.
If we wait till we’ve worked those overtime shifts
Or we have all our ducks in a row.
Because it never will happen.
So get in your office, workshop, studio or wherever you produce your art and Do the work.
Because your contribution matters.
Especially more than ever today.
A new page.
Every single day is a blank piece of paper.
You are your pen.
How are you going to write your day?
Are you just going to copy yesterday’s page
or are you going to write the best page you have ever written.
